How colour fill works
Colour fill depends on a recess to hold the colour. First, a design is created below the surface, by laser engraving, rotary engraving, acid etching or sandblasting, so there is a defined channel or frosted area for the colour to sit in. Coloured paint or enamel is then applied over the recessed design, worked into the recess so it fills completely. Once the colour has set, the surrounding surface is cleaned back, removing any colour from the flat areas and leaving pigment only within the recessed design.
The result is a clean, sharp coloured design flush with or slightly below the surface, protected by the walls of the recess. Because the colour sits in the recess, everyday handling touches the surrounding surface rather than the colour itself, so the fill stays crisp for years. On deeper rotary-engraved recesses the fill is especially robust; on shallower laser marks it needs a careful hand, which is where craft matters.
