An acrylic award is a trophy or recognition piece made from acrylic, also sold as PMMA, plexiglass or perspex. Acrylic is lighter and more impact resistant than glass, can be cut into any outline, and takes full colour printing across its whole surface.
What acrylic does that glass cannot
Acrylic can be cut to follow a logo outline, laminated in layers for depth, thermoformed into curves and printed in full colour including gradients and photographic detail. It is also roughly half the weight of glass and far less fragile in transit, which matters when awards are shipped to recipients in different countries.
The trade-off is perceived weight. Crystal feels heavier in the hand and carries a more traditional prestige. Where the design depends on colour, shape or scale, acrylic wins. Where it depends on mass and refraction, crystal usually does.
Cast versus extruded acrylic
Cast acrylic is produced in sheets between glass moulds and is the better choice for awards: it machines and laser cuts cleanly, polishes to an optically clear edge and resists crazing. Extruded acrylic is cheaper but softer, with less consistent thickness, and tends to show tool marks on cut edges.
Edge finishing is where quality shows. A flame or diamond polished edge on cast acrylic looks like glass. An unfinished saw cut never does, whatever the design.

Printing, thickness and what to specify
Three specifications decide how an acrylic award turns out. Thickness sets the perceived quality: below eight millimetres a panel reads as promotional, while twenty millimetres and up feels substantial. Print method sets the durability: printing on the reverse of a clear panel puts the ink behind the surface where it cannot scratch, while surface printing suits opaque material and textured effects. Edge finish sets the impression: polished edges look like glass, unfinished cuts never do.
Colour needs proofing. Brand colours behave differently on a transparent substrate than on paper, and white ink underlays change the result significantly. Ask for a physical proof on the actual material before a run of any size, and specify a base or backing where the design needs weight.
