Lucite is a premium, glass-clear acrylic (chemically PMMA, polymethyl methacrylate) that is cast into blocks and shapes to create awards, deal toys and display pieces. It looks like crystal, weighs less, resists shattering, and can encapsulate objects, logos and 3D elements inside a solid, optically clear form.

Where the name Lucite comes from
Lucite is technically a brand name for cast acrylic, in the same way that people say “Plexiglas” or even “Perspex”. All three are trade names for the same base polymer, PMMA. In the awards and deal toy industry, “Lucite” has become the default word for high-quality cast acrylic used in embedments and encapsulations. When a client asks us for “a Lucite award”, they are describing a category and a level of finish, not a single supplier. What matters for the end result is not the label on the sheet, but the grade of acrylic, how it is cast, and how it is finished by hand afterwards.
Why Lucite looks like crystal
Optically, high-grade cast acrylic transmits light beautifully. It has excellent clarity, a high refractive quality and, when polished correctly, edges that catch light in a way that reads as luxury. The difference between a cheap acrylic block and a genuine premium Lucite piece is almost entirely in three things: the purity of the material, the absence of internal bubbles or waves, and the quality of the polishing. A poorly finished block looks like plastic. A properly cast and hand-polished Lucite piece looks like it belongs on a boardroom shelf for the next twenty years.
The big advantage: embedments and encapsulation
The single most important reason to choose Lucite over glass or crystal is encapsulation. Because Lucite is cast as a liquid and cured, we can suspend objects inside it: a printed logo, a coin, a miniature product, a circuit board, a bottle, a 3D printed shape, even sand or documents. This is what makes Lucite the material of choice for financial deal toys, where the terms of a transaction are literally frozen inside the block, and for product launch awards, where a scale model of the product floats inside clear acrylic.

Lucite versus glass and crystal
- Weight: Lucite is roughly half the weight of glass at the same size, which matters enormously for worldwide shipping and for large pieces.
- Durability: Lucite does not shatter. Drop a crystal award on a hard floor and it can break; a Lucite piece will usually survive with, at worst, a scuff that can be repolished.
- Design freedom: Glass and crystal are shaped by moulding and cutting; Lucite can be cast into almost any geometry and can hold objects inside.
- Feel: Crystal feels cold and dense; Lucite feels warmer and lighter. Neither is “better”, they simply signal different things.
- Care: Lucite scratches more easily than glass on the surface, so it wants a soft cloth rather than an abrasive cleaner.

When Lucite is not the right choice
We will tell a client honestly when Lucite is the wrong call. If the piece needs the maximum cold, heavy, “trophy” gravitas of a traditional crystal award, or if it will live outdoors, Lucite may not be ideal. For heavy daily handling in an abrasive environment, glass keeps its surface better. Part of an advisory relationship is steering you away from a material that photographs well but disappoints in the hand.
FAQ
Is Lucite just plastic? It is an acrylic polymer, so technically yes, but calling premium cast Lucite “plastic” is like calling a fine leather bag “animal skin”. The grade, casting and finishing put it in a completely different class from moulded consumer plastic.
Can you put our logo or product inside the Lucite? Yes. Encapsulation is Lucite’s signature strength, and because we run 3D printing in house we can build a custom object to embed rather than limiting you to stock shapes.
Will it yellow over time? High-grade cast acrylic is very stable. Cheap acrylic can yellow under UV; the premium material we specify is chosen to stay clear for years of indoor display.
