How Selective Laser Melting actually works
The process begins with a bed of metal powder, often only twenty to sixty micrometres deep per layer. A laser traces the exact cross section of your trophy across that powder, delivering enough energy to melt the particles completely and fuse them to the layer below. The build platform then lowers by one layer thickness, a recoater blade spreads fresh powder, and the cycle repeats. Thousands of these micro layers accumulate into a finished three dimensional object. Because the metal is fully melted rather than merely bonded, the resulting part is dense, homogeneous, and mechanically sound.
Everything happens inside a sealed chamber flooded with inert gas, usually argon or nitrogen, to prevent oxidation at the moment of melting. SLM compared with other metal processes
SLM is a form of powder bed fusion, the same broad family as EBM, or Electron Beam Melting. The key difference is the energy source. SLM uses a laser and works in an inert gas atmosphere, while EBM uses an electron beam in a vacuum and typically runs hotter. SLM generally delivers finer surface detail and tighter feature resolution, which is why it is our preference for intricate award geometry. Compared with binder jetting, which glues powder together and requires a later sintering step, SLM produces a fully dense part in a single thermal process, with no separate furnace cycle needed to reach final density.
Design considerations for SLM awards

- Overhangs and supports: steep overhangs need support structures that are removed afterwards, so we design with print orientation in mind to protect visible surfaces.
- Wall thickness: very thin walls can warp under thermal stress, so we specify minimum thicknesses that keep fine features stable.
- Internal channels: SLM can create hollow or lattice interiors that reduce weight without changing the outer form.
- Surface orientation: the face that matters most is oriented to minimise stair stepping and support scarring.
- Post processing allowance: we leave stock material where polishing or machining will follow.
