How pad printing works
The process begins with a printing plate, called a cliché, into which the artwork is etched as a shallow recess. Ink is spread across the plate and then scraped off the flat areas, leaving ink only in the etched image. A soft silicone pad is pressed down onto the plate, picking up the ink from the recess. The pad is then lifted and pressed onto the award surface, releasing the ink as it makes contact. Because the pad is flexible, it conforms to the shape beneath it, rolling ink neatly onto curves, into recesses and over edges. As the pad lifts, the ink film’s brief exposure to air makes its surface slightly tacky, which helps it release cleanly onto the object rather than clinging to the pad.
