What is laser annealing?

Laser annealing is a marking technique that uses a focused laser to gently heat the surface of metal, changing its colour through controlled oxidation without cutting, engraving or removing any material. On awards, laser annealing produces crisp, permanent, high contrast marks, often deep black, that sit flush with a smooth surface and never wear away.

The short answer

Most people picture engraving as cutting grooves into metal. Laser annealing does something different and, for many premium awards, better. Instead of removing material, it heats the metal just enough to form a thin oxide layer beneath the surface, which appears as a dark, colour fast mark. The surface stays perfectly smooth to the touch, the mark is permanent, and the result is exceptionally clean and legible. It is the technique of choice when you want flawless lettering on a polished or coated metal award.

How laser annealing works

A fibre laser is tuned to deliver heat rather than the higher intensity used to vaporise material. As the beam traces the design, it raises the local temperature of the metal to a point where oxides form within the surface layer. Because different temperatures produce different oxide thicknesses, the technique can create a range of tones, from deep black to browns, and even iridescent blues on certain metals. The metal itself is not melted or removed, so the surface remains intact and the mark is sealed beneath it, protected from wear.
