What is kerf?

Kerf is the width of material removed by a cutting tool as it passes through a workpiece. What kerf actually is

When any blade, laser, or cutting tool passes through material, it does not simply divide it along an infinitely thin line. It removes a strip of material equal to the width of the cut. That strip, and the gap it leaves, is the kerf. A thick saw blade produces a wide kerf; a fine laser beam produces a narrow one, but there is always some.

This matters because the removed material has to come from somewhere. If a designer draws a shape at exact size and cuts it without accounting for kerf, the finished piece will be slightly smaller than intended, and any parts meant to fit together may not.
