Draft angle: the subtle taper that lets a part release cleanly

A draft angle is a slight taper deliberately added to the vertical surfaces of a part so that it releases cleanly from a mould or tool without dragging, tearing, or damaging its edges. It is one of the least visible yet most important considerations in manufacturing any moulded or cast award. The problem draft solves

Imagine pulling a cake from a tin with perfectly vertical sides against which the batter has set. It sticks, tears, and fights you. Now imagine a tin whose sides flare outward slightly toward the top; the cake slides free easily. A draft angle is that flare applied to manufactured parts. When a part is formed in a mould, perfectly vertical walls grip the mould surface through friction and suction, making release difficult and risking damage to both the part and the tool. A small taper breaks that grip.

The angle involved is usually modest, often between one and three degrees, sometimes less on smooth surfaces and more on textured ones. It is subtle enough that most people never notice it, yet without it many production methods simply would not work reliably.

Why draft matters for custom awards

Many premium awards are cast, moulded, or produced by methods where release is a real concern. If draft is neglected, the consequences show up as scuffed edges, torn detail, deformed surfaces, or parts that stick and are ruined during removal. For a bas-relief logo or a finely modelled figure, poor release can destroy exactly the detail that gives the award its value. Designing correct draft protects that detail.

Some materials release more easily than others. Getting the balance right is a judgement call, and adding too much draft can distort a design just as surely as too little can ruin its release.
