Screen printing for bold branded colour

Screen printing is a stencil based method in which ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen onto a surface, with each colour applied through its own screen, producing bold, opaque, richly saturated graphics that are especially effective for solid brand colours. It is one of the oldest and most dependable printing techniques, and it remains valuable in award making wherever a strong, flat block of precise brand colour is wanted. At Fabit, screen printing is the method we reach for when a logo demands a dense, vivid, absolutely consistent colour across a run.

How screen printing works

A screen is made by stretching a fine mesh over a frame and coating it with a light sensitive emulsion. The artwork is used to expose the emulsion so that it hardens everywhere except the image area, where it washes away to leave open mesh in the shape of the design. The screen is positioned over the piece, ink is placed on top, and a squeegee draws the ink across, forcing it through the open mesh onto the surface below. Each colour in a design needs its own screen, applied in sequence, which is why screen printing is at its best with a small number of solid, well defined colours rather than complex photographic imagery.

The result is a notably thick, opaque ink deposit. That generous layer of ink is exactly what gives screen printing its characteristic density and vibrancy, letting a colour sit boldly even on a dark or coloured surface.

Materials and applications

Screen printing adapts to many flat or gently curved surfaces, complementing the range on our materiaaldossier.

  • Glass and crystal: bold logos with excellent opacity and adhesion.
  • Acrylic: flat, saturated colour on clear or coloured stock.
  • Metal: durable branded marks on plates and panels.
  • Wood: solid colour graphics on natural surfaces.
  • Ceramics: for commemorative and presentation pieces.

Why screen printing suits premium awards

Some brands live or die by a single, exact colour, and screen printing reproduces that colour with an intensity and consistency that digital methods can find hard to match. The thick ink film gives a solidity and richness that reads as deliberate and high quality, particularly for bold, graphic identities. Because spot colours can be mixed to a precise reference before printing, brand colour fidelity is excellent. For a run of awards that must all carry an identical, saturated brand mark, screen printing is a proven and reassuringly consistent choice.

Design considerations

Screen printing favours designs with a limited palette of solid colours and clean, well defined edges. Each colour adds a screen and a print pass, so simple, bold artwork is both more effective and more economical than complex multi colour imagery. Fine gradients and photographic detail are not its strength and are better served by UV or sublimation printing. We advise on adapting artwork to suit the method during quoting, and clients can shape a bold, print ready mark in our ontwerpstudio before screens are made.

Screen printing versus other methods

Against pad printing, screen printing lays down more ink and covers larger flat areas better, while pad printing excels on small, curved or recessed surfaces. Against UV and sublimation printing, screen printing offers superior opacity and colour density for spot colours but cannot reproduce full colour photographs or gradients. Against engraving, it brings solid colour that no tool can add. Many awards pair a screen printed brand mark with engraved or etched detail, an approach we coordinate within our service voor gepersonaliseerde trofeeën.

Durability and finishing

Screen printed inks, properly cured, are hard wearing and hold their colour well, especially the specialist inks formulated for glass and metal. Adhesion depends on correct surface preparation and curing, which is why we clean surfaces carefully and cure each print fully before handling. Each finished piece is inspected for colour accuracy against the approved reference, for sharp edges and for even ink coverage without pinholes or thin patches.

Practical notes for buyers

Because each colour requires a screen to be prepared, screen printing carries a setup cost that is best absorbed across a run rather than a single piece. For a series of awards sharing the same bold branded graphic, it is highly economical and impressively uniform. For one off pieces or full colour imagery, a digital method is usually more suitable. Our in-house production and 24-hour response help keep screen printed award projects on schedule for fixed event dates.

Veelgestelde vragen

Is screen printing good for full colour photographs? No. It is built for solid spot colours. For photographs and gradients, UV or sublimation printing is the right choice.

How many colours can be printed? Several, but each adds a screen and a pass. Simple, bold palettes are most effective and economical.

Will the print match my exact brand colour? Yes. Spot inks can be mixed to a precise reference, which is one of screen printing’s real strengths.

Is it durable on glass? Yes, with the right inks and proper curing, screen printing adheres well and wears reliably on glass awards.

Screen printing remains the dependable choice for bold, saturated, exactly matched brand colour across a run of awards, delivering a density and consistency that make a graphic identity feel confident and complete.
