How sub-surface engraving works
Unlike surface engraving, which marks the outside of a material, sub-surface engraving happens deep inside a transparent block. A laser beam is focused to a precise point within the crystal. At that focal point the energy is intense enough to cause a microscopic fracture, a tiny white dot, without damaging the material the beam passes through on its way in. By moving the focal point through the volume of the crystal and firing repeatedly, the machine builds up a cloud of these points. Arranged correctly, they read as a coherent three-dimensional image.
The image is created from a 3D model or a set of layered points calculated from artwork. Because the dots exist at different depths, the picture has genuine volume: viewed from different angles it shows dimensionality that a flat engraving cannot. The surrounding crystal remains untouched and perfectly clear, which is what gives the effect its characteristic floating quality. The precision required is considerable, because the focal point must land within a fraction of a millimetre of its target and the timing of each pulse must be exact. This is why the process is entirely digital and machine-driven, yet still demands a practised operator who understands how a given crystal grade responds and can adjust the point spacing so the finished image never looks either faint or cloudy.
Turning artwork into a 3D model
The quality of a sub-surface engraving depends heavily on the point cloud that drives it. A logo, a portrait, a building or an abstract shape must first be translated into a three-dimensional arrangement of points with the right density and distribution. Too few points and the image looks faint; too many and it turns cloudy and loses contrast. Can you engrave a photo inside crystal?
Yes. We can convert a suitable photograph, including a portrait, into a 3D point model. Image quality and lighting in the original photo affect the result, so we assess each one first.
Does the engraving weaken the crystal?
No. The fracture points are microscopic and internal, so they do not compromise the structural integrity of a properly selected block.
Can we add our logo and text as well?
